I’m writing this message with the hope that you and your loved ones are safe and in good health.  Zuni Public Schools have been and will continue the 2020-2021 school year in a remote learning model through the end of the first semester.  As I have received comments expressing either relief or disappointment about this decision, I certainly can understand both perspectives and appreciate that there are many circumstances that we each are living that lead to these feelings. As the Acting Superintendent, I would like nothing more than to assure you that all will be well; however, in many ways our lives are being guided by how the Coronavirus spreads and mutates.  As of yet, there is not enough scientific information on the effects on children both short and long term. In addition, we want to protect the health and safety of all of our faculty/staff members.  Remote learning will not replace the quality of in-person instruction that our students normally receive, but we will do the very best we can to meet the academic and non-academic needs of all of our students during this public health crisis.
Over the past several months, our model for education literally shifted overnight. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the need to create new systems and structures for providing all students with a quality education, while maneuvering through challenging and what seems to be ever changing conditions. As we consider what lies ahead, we will adapt and adjust to these conditions, to ensure that we are working to meet the needs of every Zuni Public Schools student.

Although the school year currently is proceeding in a non-traditional manner, our overarching goal to educate our students to their highest potential has not changed. We are committed to work together to achieve the following guiding principles to provide a firm foundation to support our decision making, as we navigate through our constantly evolving conditions for the school year:

  • Keeping students and staff safe and healthy
  • Maintaining continuity of instruction
  • Ensuring access and equity for all students
  • Communicating with stakeholders (i.e. staff, families, ZFUSE and community)
  • Ensuring flexibility to meet the needs and advocate for all students, while maintaining fiscal solvency for the district

We know that there are many adjustments that everyone is making with regard to remote learning; and we sincerely applaud your efforts to work through these unprecedented times.  Please know that we are here to support you in any way possible, as you support your students in learning from the safety of home. We are looking forward to the return of students to our school sites, just as soon as conditions are safe to do so.  As we look to the future, we will face the year ahead in a positive and productive manner, as we work together through these difficult and challenging times.  My wish for everyone is to stay strong, stay safe, and stay well.  Please remember that everyday we are one step closer to being on the other side of this pandemic.
