Heating update, Dowa Yalanne CRT, NM School Board
Administration Meeting and Staff Christmas Party
|
AIRING: Monday, December 10, 2007
This is Superintendent Kaye Peery.
I would like to bring the community up-to-date on the status of the
“heating problems” we were experiencing at our elementary schools.
We had service technicians at A:Shiwi last Monday to diagnose the
problems with the air handler units and they found several
electrical components had been damaged by an electrical surge. All
of the units were made operational, and parts were ordered where
necessary. In addition, we purchased a large stock of space heaters
for use in any future situations of this nature. We are in the
process of contracting with a mechanical engineering firm to do a
comprehensive system check of the HVAC system at A:Shiwi since it is
old, and are no longer manufactured. Their report will be
forthcoming, probably within the next 60 days. I visited the school
on Monday morning and there are no additional heating issues at
A:Shiwi.
There was a heat issue at DY also last week in one of the support
spaces (not classrooms). The contractor was here the day before, and
they have been advised to return and fix the problem.
Again, let me apologize to the parents and the students for the
inconvenience.
Due to a small scheduling issue, the “revised” Board of Education
Policies Manual will be on the website by the end of this week,
instead of by last Friday, as planned.
DY Elementary has scheduled a Criterion Reference Test “CRT” Meeting
on December 13, 2007 at 6:00 in the school gym. We would like to
invite all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade parents to attend. This is an
important meeting for the “big” test in March. There will be
discussion on topics such as: “No Child Left Behind,” “Adequate
Yearly Progress,” “Attendance and Tardiness,” “Effective Study
Habits” … plus several others. Dinner will be served during the
meeting.
Board member DeVries and I attended the statewide New Mexico School
Board Association meeting this past weekend. The major topic of
discussion was the proposed new statewide funding formula. This new
funding formula will have major impact on all schools in the state
and will, most likely, be addressed in the upcoming legislative
session.
Just a reminder to contact Fred Whey at UNM Zuni if you are
interested in taking education courses next semester. I encourage
you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.
On 12/19/07, the District will be having our Staff Christmas Party.
In lieu of a staff gift exchange, we are asking interested staff to
bring a gift for a child to be distributed by Social Services. In
addition, we are taking names from the Angel Tree Program also
sponsored by Social Services. I encourage all community members to
contact their Social Services Office to see if there is a child you
could make happy for the holidays.
Thank you for your time.
