 2nd-- Radio Spot

Keshshi. This is Superintendent Kaye Peery.

Let me welcome everyone back from what I hope was a wonderful Thanksgiving or Shalak’o cooking day….or, both.

This week I would like to concentrate on some good things currently going on in the District.

On Tuesday, November 20, 2007, I spent some extended time with Mr. Dan Simplicio in my office discussing several issues concerning the community. In addition, we spoke about how the negativity for this administration is not helping to resolve the more important concerns of our community…..the education of our children. I feel hopeful that some of Mr. Simplicio’s concerns have been addressed. I feel that we are on the threshold of a genuine attempt, on all of our parts, to work together.

By the Christmas Break, we are hopeful that the Twin Buttes High School renovation project will be under way. As you know the Public School Capital Outlay Council (PSCOC) has approved the expenditure of $2.1 million to remediate the health and safety concerns in Twin Buttes High School. The architects expect the design phase to be completed by the first week of January, with construction to begin in February. The schedule calls for all work to be completed before the opening of school in August 2008. District staff is planning to temporarily relocate the TBHS students to available space in the “old high school” building while construction is underway. Plans are to accomplish this move over the winter break. Many of the Zuni residents have attended school in the Twin Buttes facility and we are excited about reviving this old school building.

I have been working with Fred Whey at the Zuni Branch of UNM to provide educational training for our instructional staff. We are especially interested in assisting local people to become endorsed in the areas of math, science, special education or educational administration. Mr. Whey and I are committed to offering courses in these areas, locally here in Zuni. Please contact Fred or me immediately if you are interested. If we can put together enough interested people, classes can start as early as January. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Zuni people to pursue a teaching or educational administration degree, and to become more involved in the teaching of our children.

Additionally, I have recently been informed that ZHS will be offering their students the opportunity to attend an “auto mechanics course” at the Zuni Branch of UNM, during blocks 1 and 2. This course is scheduled to start during the winter semester, which starts in January 2008. Each class will be able to accommodate approximately 15 students for each class, for a total of 32 students for the two (2) blocks.

I am also happy to announce that we have extended our District web page to include an interactive message board. In layman’s terms….a “blog.” We hope everyone in the community will visit the “blog” and share their comments, concerns or questions. You can get to the “blog” through our web page at www.zspd.org. We can’t wait to hear from everyone! Remember, if you don’t have a computer you can go to the local library, where several are available for community use.

Your Zuni Board of Education and I continue to invite the community to attend each and every board meeting. The next scheduled Board Meeting is December 10, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. at Twin Buttes High School.
