 Welcome to the Zuni Public School District

Zuni Public School District is a unique and progressive educational system currently undergoing extensive restructuring and reorganization to better meet the educational needs of our children. This year, three of our schools are associated with America’s Choice. Two other schools within the district have made AYP and hold no NCLB designations. All schools and programs operate under the directed site-based model

The Zuni Public School District has a long and productive relationship with local tribal agencies, Zuni Public Health Services and the Bureau of Indian Affairs to provide support for educational programs within the schools. Parental involvement in the schools is a priority for the district and all schools strive to address that priority through various programs including the Parent Scholar Program at the elementary school level, the Parents as Mentors Program at Zuni Middle School and through the various booster clubs and Parent-Teacher-Student Organizations.

It is the intent of the Zuni Public School District to create a thoughtful and nurturing environment in which all stakeholders collaborate in restructuring the system to better meet the needs of the students now and in the future.

Parents volunteer at all the schools in a variety of settings and there are "parent work nights" during which parents and teachers work together making the "extras" that are needed for classrooms including furniture, costumes, paint smocks, computer covers, etc.

Close to 2,000 student’s ages 3-21, are served in the 5 public schools, 2 parochial schools and 1 Tribal Head Start program. Ninety-nine percent (99%) are enrolled members of the Zuni Tribe.

It is the philosophy of the Zuni Public School District that the schools exist to help students develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to be a productive member of society. Education is a continuous part of the life process and the schools share this process responsibility with the home and the community. The schools must provide a solid foundation to assist the students to become functioning members of the family, the Zuni community and world outside the community. We believe that education should prepare the student for the highly complex and pluralistic world of today and the future.

 The students of the Zuni Public School District possess a unique cultural and linguistic heritage. The educational program must utilize these unique cultural and linguistic assets as it prepares the student to function in the pluralistic society of this country and world. Each student is a unique individual and the educational process must recognize this as it strives to provide a challenging and enriching program to meet the diverse needs of our students. Education should prepare students to make life and career choices and decisions based on individual interests, preferences, community values and skills. Specifically, the educational goals of the Zuni Public School District are:

To prepare students for adult living as self-fulfilling individuals, citizens and workers in Zuni and the larger community of man;

To instill in students the belief in the dignity of man, the value of education and the uniqueness and beauty of the Zuni way of life. You can read more about Dowa Yalanne's Reading Success!
