Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week, May 5-9
If you can read this newsletter, say “Thank you” to a Teacher!

From the Principal’s Pen

May is upon us and as you can tell by the events list, this is a busy season for staff and students! Please continue to remind your students of finishing strong by working hard up until the end of school. They really need parental support to make it to the finish line.

As the school year ends, there are some items for next year needing your input. On Tuesday, May 6,@ 6:00 PM, there will be a presentation concerning academic proficiency for next year. What grading measure is to be used, how attendance counts in promotion/retention decisions and the importance of NWEA scores will be presented and explained. Please make it a priority to attend this information session as the ZMS staff wants all parents/guardians fully informed about decisions affecting their child’s education.

Eighth Grade Portfolio Presentations will take place May 14 and are being scheduled by the homeroom teacher. We invite families to come and support their student in this presentation. Promotion to high school is coming up for the eighth grade students and a letter from the Eighth Grade Staff Team will be forthcoming with details for the ceremony.

I want to hit the subject of uniforms one more time with this important reminder: the uniform instituted this year will be same for next year, so as you shop this summer, keep the guidelines in mind. Navy, black, white polo shirts; navy and khaki twill slacks, tucked in with a belt. An additional piece will be a button-down white oxford dress shirt, also tucked in with a belt.

THERE WILL BE NO T-SHIRTS OR BLACK PANTS OR JEANS. Consequences for non-compliance will be more detailed in the Agenda book for next year.

To end on a positive note, our students made some academic gains this year and I know that will continue next year. It has been my professional and personal privilege to serve the students, staff and families of Zuni. I learned many new things this year and look forward to the 2008-2009 school year!

Selected Poetry Readings

April is National Poetry Month, so ZMS is celebrating with daily poems from great poets, past and present.

The activity for this month will be a Poetry Reading Night, April 24, 2008, 5:30-7:00 PM.

If you enjoyed our Math Night, come join us for this fun and inspirational evening. Light refreshments will be served and prizes will be given away. ZMS students are writing poems to be delivered that evening, with the winning poems receiving awards. BE There…it will be worth it!

Poetry Night April 24 5:30-7:00 pm

From the Principal’s Pen

Spring has arrived and I hope everyone had a great break! Now, it is time to buckle down and have a glorious finish to the rest of the school year.

FYI: Our NWEA scores showed more students achieving proficiency in the Winter testing! Thanks for supporting the ZMS students and staff during all testing. The charts on the back of the newsletter have the numbers of students proficient broken down by grade levels.

Eighth grade parents, beginning April 11th students will bring home a grade/behavior progress report every other Friday that is to be reviewed by you, signed, and returned the following Monday.

Students have this 4th nine weeks to bring the semester average up to passing, so I want to monitor more closely how they are doing. I don’t want “surprises” for you when your student has to be retained. All students will receive the sheet, so no one eighth grader is being singled out.

This is a busy time at ZMS and we will continue to keep you informed of all activities and decisions informing students.

I would still like three parents to provide input on uniform additions/deletions for next year.

Thanks for your support and have a blessed spring!

Susan Montoya, ZMS Principal

Principal’s March Book of the Month:
    Staff Biographies

Biographies have been a large part of the current Ramp-Up Literacy study on “The Civil Rights Movement”, so this is the genre we will be pursuing this month! All staff and faculty have been asked to submit their biographies. One will be presented each day and students will cast their vote as to which staff member the biography goes to. This will be a fun activity for the students and add another genre to their literacy education!

    FAMILY MATH NIGHT IS COMING!!

    BE THERE!

From the Principal’s Pen

Are you looking forward to spring and the end of the cold weather? I know the ZMS staff and students are ready for the heat! The students have been very challenged with the NWEA and NMSBA testing, and their hard work will show in the final results. Just a reminder that students need to pass this third nine weeks…I hope they have taken seriously the retention information presented to them. Parent/Teacher conferences will be Wed, March 26, 2008 from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and scheduling for that will begin shortly. Please make every effort to attend the conference and pick up your child’s report card. I also hope to see you at Math Night!

Thank you for working with Ms. Owaleon on bringing our attendance up. Keep up the good work. Research proves successful students are in the classroom everyday! We were able to provide transportation

At ZMS, we are starting to plan for next year and I would like to have some parent input concerning next year’s uniform (yes, the uniform will still be here!) so definite guidelines can be provided for families before the end of this school year. Please contact me if you would like to serve on the Uniform Committee. I would like three parents, if possible.

Lastly, I want to share with you that it has been a pleasure to talk about Zuni Middle School at the conferences I have attended. The work of our students just astounds others when it is displayed. I am proud of our staff and students and appreciate the support families and community members give to ZMS. Please keep it up!

From the Principal’s Pen

Happy New Year!

I hope you and your student have had a restful break and are ready for the academic challenges of the second semester. This is a chance for a new start if the first semester was difficult for your child.

I hope all parents/guardians will attend the Parent/Teacher conferences on January 16th from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Scheduling for that day will be coming after the staff returns from break.

I would like to ask you to remind your child of the following procedures that have not changed and will be enforced again in the new semester:
School begins at 7:45 AM and it is important students attend school everyday. Too many tardies and absences hurt the AYP required rate. Improvement in this area is critical this semester!

Dress code has not changed. Navy, white, or black polo shirts, long or short sleeves. Plain sweatshirts in navy, white or black may be worn over the polo shirt ONLY! No T-shirts. The only slacks permitted are to be navy or khaki twill pants worn with a belt. Parents will be contacted and asked to bring the proper clothing or take the student home. This may sound harsh, but rules are rules and not following them is insubordination which can not be tolerated. Being “clothes police” is not the main task an educator should undertake while instructing students.

I appreciate your help in these areas as ZMS parents/guardians are supportive of the work of the staff. Have a joyful and prosperous 2008!

Zuni Middle School

Principal’s January Book of the Month

The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes

The activity to go with this special book will be a
“Project Runway” contest in which all students will
redesign the school uniform!

Additionally, students wishing to may enter a clothing
design in the casual and dress categories.

On Tuesday, Jan 29, parents and community members
are asked to attend the “design showcase” and place
their votes for the winning designs in all three categories.

One male and one female design will be chosen
in each category.

This activity ties with the story of The Hundred Dresses
as art is used to teach students about judging others
by their clothing.

Light refreshments will be served and winners will be
announced around 7:15 PM. Please join us as ZMS
celebrates the artistic talents of the students!

THANKS TO THOSE WHO ATTENDED THE LITERACY BINGO NIGHT! WE HOPE TO HAVE MORE OF THESE FAMILY ACTIVITIES IN THE COMING YEAR!

FALCON PROCEDURE NOTES
Recently some forms were sent home with students for parent/guardian signature. These federal and health forms are required documents that affect funding for ZMS.

If your child has not returned the forms, please have them do so immediately.

Please call Ms. Owaleon, 782-5561, with any questions concerning the forms. Thanks for your help with this critical information!

From the Principal’s Pen

Thank you, again, for a productive and successful first half of the school year.

Research has proven over and over how much of an impact parental/guardian involvement makes in the academic proficiency of students. The staff  and students will continue to work hard as we begin the second semester Jan 12, 2008. NWEA and NMSBA testing are right around the corner!

Eighth grade parents/guardians, please remind your students of the need for attention to their academic work. Their moving on to ZHS or Twin Buttes depends on passing core 8th grade subjects. We do not want students to be unprepared for the rigorous content of high school subject matter. My goal is for every 8th grader to participate in the Eighth Grade Celebration and to confidently move to high school.

On behalf of the Montoya family, I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and Joyous New Year in 2008! May peace and love reign in your homes and your hearts.
Susan D. Montoya, Principal

From the Principal’s Pen
In this month of giving thanks, I want to take this opportunity to say “Thank You” for the support the parents and guardians give to the ZMS students. I am thankful to be in a community where children and education are valued. Also, I am thankful for a professional and knowledgeable staff that goes above and beyond in providing quality education for students. Please take a moment during this time to thank your child’s teacher…they would appreciate the encouragement!
We are still working hard to improve after viewing the data from NWEA testing. I hope you found Parent/Teacher conferences informative and helpful in working with your student at home. Only by the staff and parents/guardians working together can we obtain academic success for all students. This is a team effort!
Have a blessed Thanksgiving!
Susan D. Montoya, ZMS Principal

FOR YOUR INFORMATION: All students attended a “Bullying Presentation” given by New Beginnings the last week of October. Hopefully, this will stop some of the inappropriate behaviors at ZMS. We are working on the problem!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S PEN

The past month has been very busy at ZMS and the pace will become hectic as the holiday season approaches.

Thanks to Mr. Chas Strickler, ZMS Counselor, and the students and staff, NWEA testing went very smoothly. We will be finished by the end of this week, and below are the results for reading and math, our biggest concerns.

Our students have worked very hard, but there is still more work to be done, so please continue to work with them at home. Your support is key to student achievement !

All results will be reviewed at the Parent/Teacher Conferences on Oct 24, so please be there.

Enjoy the fall season!
