From the Principal’s Office:Recently we held class meetings with
our students. We presented information to them regarding their
recent NWEA test scores as well as other indicators of academic
progress. We awarded students with perfect attendance with two
movie passes at the Red Rock Six Theatre in Gallup.
The students with perfect attendance are:
Freshmen: 3
Sophomores: 1
Juniors : 4
Seniors: 2
The counseling department also presented results on the PLAN
test and other relevant information. The students were very
responsive to this activity and they were treated with ice cream
sundaes for the work and effort they have put forward during the
testing activity. More testing is yet to come—NMELPA, NWEA,
ACT—and we hope that all students can continually be motivated
to do their best.
The end of the year is rapidly approaching! Thank you for your
continued support of Zuni High School.Dr. Richard YzenbaardZHS

From the Principal’s Office:
At the time of this writing Zuni High School is very much in
transition. The basketball season is over and the spring sport
season is just beginning. During past few weeks we have
completed many state-mandated assessments with just a couple
more on the horizon.
The third quarter of the 2007-2008 school is almost over with
only one more quarter is the school year to go. Mark Wednesday,
March 26 on your calendars for Parent/Teacher Conferences. More
information about these conferences will be coming later.
On Wednesday, March 5 The Zuni High School Student Council
sponsored a Family Fun night. For those attending we enjoyed an
evening of food, fun & fellowship. The students planned both
large group and small group activities. One of the favorite
large group activities was the “Rez Game.” Small group
activities included board games, an activity moving foam cups by
using only strings and a rubber band, and Jeopardy. Thank you to
everyone who made this night a success.
As we approach the last few months of the year there sometimes
is a perception that we are just coasting to the end. Nothing
could be further from the truth! We are busier than ever.
Already we are analyzing the results from the assessment the
students took just a couple weeks ago and making decisions how
to improve our practice. In a very real sense this time of year
is not the end, but the beginning of positive change for Zuni
High School. I encourage all parents to come out for the
parent/teacher conferences on March 26. This is a critical time
to ensure that your child will successfully complete this school
year.

Are YOU ready for college?

Do you plan to “take a break” first and then start school? Are
you unsure of what to go to school for? What are you scared of
most?
If those questions ever crossed your mind, don’t worry; you’re
not the only one to have those thoughts. But remember, you lose
out on $Mucho Cash$ if you don’t go to school in the fall
semester after you graduate. Don’t worry about not being sure
what to go to school for. Each program has core classes that
you’ll need to take, so do those first. Just DON’T GIVE UP!!

From the Principal’s Office:
The second half of the school year seems to be going at a
blistering pace. The third quarter progress reports will be
coming out already on Feb. 14. The months of February and March
will be filled up with a variety of state-mandated testing. We
have just completed the New Mexico High School Competency Exam
and are in the middle of the NorthWest Educational Assessment.
Coming up at the end of the month and going into March will be
the New Mexico Standards Based Assessment. We hope that your
child will be prepared for these assessments and give their best
efforts in these activities.
We have had a
couple of delayed start days due to weather conditions and
perhaps more will follow. We will try to get the information out
by Public Service Announcements on television and on radio. We
also will post school delays or school closure information on
the district website at
www.zpsd.org -- look for the School Closure Alert link
(towards the middle of the page). In addition, you can also call
the school at 782-4451 to get the latest information. We want to
thank you for your cooperation during these days when the
weather can be difficult.
In case you
haven’t heard the news, two of our coaches recently earned state
honors. Mr. Chris Carroll was voted to be the New Mexico
Cross-Country Coach of the year and Mr. Albert Chopito was
selected as the New Mexico Assistant Cross-Country Coach of the

From the
Principal’s Office:
One of the most enjoyable parts of my day happens when I walk
down the hallways at Zuni High School and listen to the music
coming from the classrooms. No, I am not talking about music
emitting from CD Players, MP-3’s or other electronic devices.
The music I am referring to is the music of instructional
dialogue. I hear teachers teaching, student learning and observe
many positive interactions between staff and students.
Now don’t get me wrong. I am not attempting to paint a picture
of a perfect high school where no problems exist. To be sure, we
have our challenges like any other high school, but I am very
pleased at the way our staff and students are responding to
these challenges. I am seeing things happen at ZHS that I never
observed before. I see and hear a focus on learning. I see
positive respectful behavior demonstrated at all levels. Staff
are stepping up and providing services over and above their
contract obligations and students are positively responding to
these efforts.
As I mentioned at our recent community forum meeting, I invite
and encourage all parents and community members to visit our
school at any time. I would love to walk with you down our
hallways and listen to the music. Thank you for your support,Dr.
ZHS Principal
AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION PROGRAMIn our continuing efforts to
provide a productive and positive school environment for our
students we are developing an after school detention program to
work with students who are having difficulties with their
attendance and other issues. Starting on Nov. 27 we will
discontinue having a noon lunch detention program and instead
initiate an after school detention program. Other schools in the
district have already or are considering going this direction as
well.
Basically this is how it is going to work:· Days of the week
after school program will be running: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday·
Time for after school detention program: 3:30 – 5:00· Students
will be given the opportunity to reflect on the reason they were
assigned detention and to develop an action plan to correct the
situation. Students may also be given the opportunity to work on
classroom assignments (with teacher assistance) once the
students have finished their reflection activity· Parents will
be notified of the date that their child has detention
It is our hope that this program will not only serve as a
deterrent to attendance problems, but also provide a means and
an opportunity to work with students who are getting behind in
the classroom work.
If you have any questions about this program, please feel free
to contact the Zuni High School Office.
YES! Yearbooks from 2006-07 are still available! They’re
awesome, so come and buy yours in room 217!
