Mr. Ernest Mackel – Zuni Public School Board President
 

Mr. Ernest Mackel, has a long and distinguished history of representing Zuni interest at the local, state, regional, and national lever of education policy development.

Mr. Mackel, a full time Maintenance and Operations Foremen for the Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Albuquerque Area Office, Zuni Agency, has given much of his personal time to serving the Zuni people over the past 17 years.

Mr. Mackel was first elected to the Zuni School Board in 2001 and served on the UNM-Gallup local advisory board beginning with his election in 2001 and reelection on February 1, 2003. His term on the UNM-Gallup Advisory Board ended with the February 1, 2005.

Among Mr. Mackel’s most notable accomplishments has been his participation with the National Indian Education Association (NIEA). In an effort to uphold the NIEA’s established purpose to unite Indians in changing ineffective educational laws and to ensure the Native voices were heard in policy decisions. NIEA held a series of hearing in 2005 on No Child Left Behind in Indian Country.

Mr. Mackel has been an active member of the New Mexico School Boards Association (HMSBA) since 2001 and he completed the NMSBA’s Leadership Development Program in December 2005.

As of December 4, 2006, Mr. Mackel was invited to participate on a stakeholder panel for the Independent Comprehensive Study of the New Mexico Public School Funding Formula.

Mr. Andrew Othole – Zuni Public School Board Vice President


Mr. Andrew Othole, veteran of the United States Armed Forces and another member to the Zuni Board of Education since April 2005, currently works full time in the Pueblo of Zuni Office of Planning and Development.

Mr. Othole served a Lieutenant Governor for the Pueblo of Zuni from 1994 and 1998. Prior to becoming Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Othole was one of the co-founders of the Zuni Heritage and Historic Preservation Office. He served as the Pueblo of Zuni Cultural Preservation Coordinator from 1986 to 1993.

Mr. Othole has served on the northern area Workforce Investment Board appointed by Governor Johnson and served on the Adaptive Management Workgroup for the Colorado Plateau; an appointment by the Secretary of Indian Affairs, Bruce Babbit. In 1996, Mr. Othole served on the committee for Higher Education.

He is a graduate of Certified Public Managers Program (USDA Graduate School) and Western New Mexico University’s Economic Development Program in 2000.

Mr. Othole has been most effective in representing Zuni interests, especially when it comes to working with the Zuni Tribal organization to secure funding for the schools and community. Some of the funding Mr. Othole has advanced includes; building of a new Head Start facility and funds to construct a new concession stand and make other improvement to the Zuni High School football field. Mr. Othole’s multiple talents and expertise have been extremely valuable to the Zuni Public School District.
